Sustainable Practices
We want to not only benefit from the environment, but also allow the environment benefit from us. With that in mind, we ethically source ingredients and craft our products to do just that -- benefit the environment. We go a step beyond "natural," to use sustainable and renewable practices that promote the health of plants and animals around us.
Our tallow comes from cattle that, once weaned from their mother’s milk, are grass fed and grass finished – never grain fed or forced to eat GMO food. No crates or cages were ever used to house the animals, animals were provided an enriched environment with outdoor access, plenty of pasture to roam, as well as cared for by the same family from birth until death. This results in healthier cattle that do not need antibiotics from being over crowded, force-fed GMOs, or living in filth. A starchy grain diet can undo omega 6:3 ratios and CLA values which in turn eliminates any benefit for our skin. By providing an enriched environment for these animals, we're also promoting nourishing products for us. See our post on Why Grass-Fed Tallow? to learn more.
The farmers implement a 30-45 day rest period between grazing each pasture, which increases the density of existing plants in the pasture and allows for the re-introduction of new native plants. As a result, the organic grassland is deeply rooted. The better root structure and thicker sod enables the landscape to catch, absorb, and hold nearly all its rainfall eliminating soil erosion or flooding. This sustainable eco-system is a natural carbon recycler -- the carbon the cattle produces is reused by the pasture for further growth eliminating the use of synthetic fertilizers.
We source our oils and herbs from organic producers. No pesticides are used on the plants which mean that habitats, eco-systems, and the health of surrounding animals are not compromised. Wildlife can be exposed to pesticides directly, by eating contaminated food or water, breathing pesticide spray, or absorbing pesticides through their skin. Predators such as hawks and owls can become poisoned by eating other animals that have been exposed to pesticides. Because many insecticides affect the nervous systems of wildlife, exposure to a particular insecticide can affect animals indirectly, by interfering with their ability to survive or reproduce. For example, wildlife may be unable to escape from predators, incubate a nest properly, or may suffer health effects such as seizures. Organic farming practices also preserve the health of the worker and their families making for better working conditions and safer home environment. Learn more about our Clean Ingredients here.
Because we do not use synthetic substances, our products are gentle septic systems. If you have a septic system, there's no fear that synthetic detergents and preservatives will destroy your septic system by demolishing the beneficial bacteria flora. If you have city water, you can be assured that these products break down without leaving trace chemical contaminants in our water supply.
By carefully choosing our suppliers and consciously crafting our products, we can eliminate any harm and support practices that promote the welfare of plants, animals, and the environment around us. The best part of all, is how great our products work at no cost to our Earth.
